Expanded Metal

Expanded metal sheet is made by first creating multiple slits in the sheet, and then stretching the sheet. The stretching creates a unique diamond pattern opening with one of the strands protruding at a slight angle. These raised strands can be flattened later in the process if desired.

The major advantage of expanded metal is that the mesh is formed from a single piece of material like mild steel, stainless steel or any other metal sheet which is cut and stretched while still leaving it attached at the knuckle. This allows it to retain its shape when cut and will not separate. Often cutting to shape is the only fabrication required. The uncut knuckles support weight and withstand stress better than jointed welds or woven materials.

Expanded mesh can be supplied in a variety of finishes, thickness, raised or flattened. Thought the flattened mesh is smoother, it is not as strong as the more robust raised mesh.

Mainly used as gratings, catwalks, machine guards and nowadays a lighter quality expanded metal is used as plastering mesh, brick force mesh and corner beading.

1. Grating and flooring: Expanded metal is often used as a durable and slip-resistant grating or flooring material in industrial and commercial settings, such as walkways, platforms, and stair treads.

2. Security fencing: Expanded metal can also be used as a security fence material due to its strength and durability. It is commonly used to secure construction sites, warehouses, and other commercial properties.

3. Filters: Expanded metal can be used as a filter medium due to its open mesh design, which allows air and fluids to pass through while trapping debris and other particles.

4. Decorative applications: Expanded metal can be used to create decorative features in architectural and interior design applications, such as decorative screens, wall panels, and furniture.

5. Automotive and aerospace: Expanded metal is used in the automotive and aerospace industries for applications such as radiator grilles, air filters, and soundproofing.

6. HVAC and ventilation: Expanded metal is often used in HVAC and ventilation systems as a filter medium or as a material for air diffusers and grilles.

7. Energy and construction: Expanded metal is used in various energy and construction applications, such as solar panel installation, noise barriers, and reinforcement for concrete structures.
